After an absence of almost 12 years, Air France has reinstated a direct flight between Cape Town and Paris.
Pierre Descazeaux, senior vice-president Air France/KLM for Africa and the Middle East, said on Friday that Air France will fly the route in the European winter months, November to March.
“There is a lot of traffic from Europe and France in particular to Cape Town during our winter months. If demand remains high, we will consider keeping the flight for longer periods. This is an initial trial period but forward bookings indicate demand is very high. We’re very happy to be back in Cape Town.”
Air France’s partner Dutch airline KLM already flies direct flights between Cape Town and Amsterdam daily.
Descazeaux said the new Air France offering is increasing the traffic to South Africa and does not seem to pose a threat for load factors on KLM’s flights.
The French community in South Africa is around 7 000 strong and 200 French companies have set up operations in South Africa.
About 76% of passengers on Air France are leisure customers. The rest travel to South Africa on business.
Air France flew to SA for the first time in 1953. Its partner KLM flew its first flight to South Africa in 1938.
Ticket prices range from R7 500 return in economy class to R30 000 return in business class.
