Zimbabwe government plans to impose higher mining fees on both new and existing operators, Mines minister Orbet Mpofu told delegates at a mining conference in the capital Harare.
This comes after Finance Minister Tendai Biti in his 2012 national budget increased royalties on gold and platinum from 4, 5 percent and 5 percent to 7 percent and 10 percent respectively with effect from January 2012.
Mpofu said the cabinet had already apporved the plan.
“All applicants for special grants or claims will have to fork out an application fee,” Mpofu said.
“You will have to fork out $1 million for diamonds and we have got over 500 applicants on diamonds and all the current licence holders will have to pay because we are going to backdate the fees," he added.
